Frequently Asked Questions

I have been told that BT are starting to switch off all of their analogue lines soon, and that I have to replace my current Telephone system with a digital one, is this correct? Back to Top

Between 2006 and 2011 BT will be managing the upgrade of its phone, broadband and ISDN lines to the next-generation network, however most existing telephones systems out in the field have been tested by BT and will work fine after the switch over, for more information on this visit www.switchedonuk.org/home/how/compatibility/ and click on the 'Equipment that has been tested' link.

I have been hearing a lot about VOIP and that I can get free calls, what can you tell me about it?Back to Top

VOIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, and it enables voice calls to be transmitted in data packets, the same principal as data information is shared between computers. For domestic users there are many available VOIP handsets, used through your PC, and web based programs that can be used and from computer to computer for free calls, however there are costs for calls to existing land line numbers and these are usually at a higher premium than your regular landline calls. For the business user things are slightly different, again there are web based service providers that offer handsets and call packages, similar to a mobile phone contract. Another use for the larger company is to connect site telephone systems together using a dedicated line, this can be ISDN, SDSL or ADSL (not recommended for more than one line due to the variables in connection quality) allowing sites to talk to each other over the data network.

What kind of quality are the IP cameras? I have used a web cam and was not impressed with the quality.Back to Top

Over the last 3 years the quality of the network cameras available has rocketed, with superior high resolution cameras (mega pixel range) for details of the technology visit www.axis.com/products/video/camera/image_quality.htm.

Are the IP Camera systems more expensive than traditional CCTV systems?Back to Top

A recent study has been carried out and concludes that if a full IP infrastructure is installed then the IP cameras will always be cheaper, for details of the study visit www2.axis.com/files/whitepaper/wp_axis_tco_en_0709.pdf.

I have an existing site that has an analogue CCTV system installed, I want to be able to watch my cameras remotely so am thinking of going to IP network cameras, will I have to replace all of my old cameras?Back to Top

No, Axis manufacture converters that change the analogue signal of traditional cameras into digital signals, then with the correct software and network setup the existing system can be altered to work as you wish.
